CHAPTER 21

MARTINA

He lowers his palm away from my mouth but keeps his other wrapped around my waist.

Excitement bleeds into my residual fear. “Why did you lock the door?”

“Because if anyone walks in on what I’m about to do to you, they won’t be walking out alive.”

My heart is in free-fall inside my chest. “Wha—”

“I’m going to teach you a lesson,” he growls against my ear. “Did you think you’d get away with that scene by the pool without any punishment? Anyone could have seen you.”

The dark possessiveness that slips into his tone makes the hairs on my nape stand. “No one was around.” I swallow. “No one, except you.”

He grips my shoulders, spins me around, and presses my back against the door. I get my first glimpse of his face since he grabbed me, and it sends a strange cocktail of fire and ice through my veins. His eyes are glazed over with heat and anger and something that looks completely out of control.

I gasp when he removes one hand from my shoulder and wraps it around my neck. It’s not firm, but the warning is clear. He leans in close enough for his breath to fan against my skin. “Are you religious?”

What?

He gives me no time to be confused when he tightens his hold on my neck.

“Agnostic,” I choke out.

“You might want to start believing in God, so you can pray no one saw you. I’d hate for Tommaso or Polo to lose an eye.”

My mouth parts in shock as the situation finally sinks in.

He’s furious.

I didn’t just step cross a boundary this time. I leapt over it.

He lets go of my neck but doesn’t move away an inch. I take a deep breath, my hard nipples brushing against his chest. He looks down, his expression thunderous.

I’m genuinely scared.

“What are you going to do to me?” I whisper.

“Exactly what I told you I would.” His voice drags over that achy place between my legs. When his big hands wrap around my waist, it feels like he’s touching bare skin. The thin robe is no match for the energy exchange between our bodies.

Before I have time to process what’s going on, he throws me over his shoulder and steadies me with a hand on the back of my thigh.

“Giorgio!” I yelp. I’m completely naked under the robe, and if he moves his hand up just a few inches, he’ll be touching my bare ass. If he looks over, he’ll probably see… I swallow. I don’t think he’s realized I’m wearing nothing underneath.

He carries me through the doorway between our rooms and deposits me roughly on his bed. The belt of my robe is loose, and the entire thing nearly flies opens, but I manage to pull it tightly around me at the last second.

“I told you to drop it, didn’t I?” He anchors his hands on the bracket of the four-poster bed and stares down at me. “Instead, you left my office and decided to tempt me.”

I scramble onto my knees and edge up the bed to put some distance between us, but he’s as fast as a tiger.
